Our private Singing Lessons are tailored to your ability, goals and needs. Below is a breakdown of what is included in our Singing Lessons.
Singing Lessons cover:
- Scales and Exercises
This refers to the songs themselves. As our lessons include classical, music theatre, popular and jazz styles, there are a wide variety of songs that we can cover. Repertoire can be based on the student’s choice, or on what pieces we feel would best assist that student’s learning. Students are also welcome to bring songs they have written. The choice is yours!
During each lesson we will break down the song and apply the techniques learnt during the scales and exercises portion of the lesson. We will work on whatever area the student needs in improvement in, whether that is breathing, diction, pitch, rhythm, dynamics or even just conveying the emotion of the song.
You wouldn’t expect a dancer to perform without warming up, so don’t sing without warming up. Our warm-ups are designed to be fun and gentle, ensuring vocal safety for the remainder of the lesson. Warm-ups generally take less than 10 minutes at the beginning of each session.
Scales and Exercises
This is the technical part of the session. Our scales and exercises work on your music ear and vocal technique- anything from your pitch, the placement of your tongue, and the shape of your mouth to your diction and pronunciation.
When you get right down to it, all singing is the movement, pressure, and control of breath. Lack of proper breath control can result weak, airy singing that is difficult to pitch. Throughout the lessons we teach exercises and tips on how to properly manage your breath, build up abdominal muscle and increase your pitch accuracy and duration.
Our lessons are flexible and can be organised to suit your timetable, whether before or after school or business hours. We often work for young adults, many of whom have large costs associated with each unit they take. Because of this, we try to keep our lessons cheap and straightforward to organise.
Organising a Lesson
The first lesson with Ellen McCarthy Music is always free! This is so we can establish where you’re at and what you need to work on. We’ll also go over how many lessons you require and your timetable. After that, all Singing lessons are $40 a session.
